Traditional masonry heaters take hours to heat up.  This variation, using our Elm wood stove, begins providing radiant heat within half an hour, and gradually stores heat in the masonry mass for release gradually as the wood stove temp is reduced.

John heats his home with a combination of systems.  There is the radiant Elm stove in the lower level, which also heats water in conjunction with the 2 solar panels on the South side of his house.  There is also an oil fired boiler, which he uses as little as possible.
